Sports Division

The Sports Division is the heart of the Department of Sports Development and is responsible for the promotion, regulation, coordination, and development of sports activities in Sri Lanka, from grassroots to elite levels.

The division formulates and implements programs aimed at strengthening national sports structures, improving athlete performance, and expanding opportunities for participation across all age groups. It works in close collaboration with national sports federations, associations, coaches, technical officials, and other relevant stakeholders to support training programs, competitions, talent identification initiatives, and athlete development pathways.

In addition, the Sports division plays a key role in coordinating national and international sporting events, overseeing the preparation and participation of national teams and supporting high-performance sports programs. The division also contributes to the implementation of policies, rules and standards governing sports administration, coaching, officiating, and competition management.

Through effective coordination, monitoring, and stakeholder engagement, the Sports Division seeks to enhance performance standards, promote fair play and discipline, encourage inclusivity and equal opportunity, and foster a strong and sustainable sporting culture throughout the country, in line with national development objectives.
